Ballisticrats (Action Shooting)

The Ballisticrats action shooting team is made up of homeschooled students from the Saint Louis metro area, including surrounding counties. We participate in timed steel plate target matches; primarily Scholastic Action Shooting Program but also Steel Challenge, Rimfire Challenge and others.

The Ballisticrats are registered with the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).  We also participate in shoots for other governing bodies such as Steel ChallengeRimfire Challenge and USPSA.

Information for Participants:
  • Grade/Age Levels: Grades 5 through High School; minimum age 10.  Participants must have the physical strength to repeatedly lift, hold, and manage a rifle.  Also must have mental and emotional ability to learn, understand and follow safe firearm handling rules.
  • Practices: 6:00-8:00 pm Monday evenings at Benchrest Rifle Club in Wright City, MO.
  • Cost:
    • Annual fee: $300 per youth participant: $100 payable when a participant submits their registration form; balance due by December 1.  This fee covers registration with SASP, entry fees for SASP MO State and Regional shoots (one discipline each), and the cost of one team jersey for the participant.  There are no additional practice fees during the year.
    • Ammo cost: Athletes will be expected to provide their own ammo.  Those who use their own firearms can choose whatever ammo they prefer.  Those who use team guns MUST use approved ammo.  For .22 rimfire, CCI Mini Mags are acceptable; any others must be approved by team coaches.  For 30 practices + State & Regional shoots team members can expect to use a minimum of 5000 rounds of ammo; more will be needed for additional shoots.  The team may arrange group ammo purchases on occasion, depending on availability.  Some team members may wish to shoot centerfire, which typically involves 9mm Luger/Parabellum ammo.
    • Competition fees:  Additional disciplines at SASP State and Regional will incur (estimated) additional fees of $25-30 per discipline per shoot.  In addition, team members are expected to attend other steel plate shoots besides SASP, such as Steel Challenge or Rimfire Challenge; costs for these will vary by location and event.  We often participate in monthly Steel Challenge matches at Central Ozarks Practical Shooters (near Rolla, MO) where youth shoot free for the 1st discipline.  New team members are expected to attend at least one non-SASP shoot; returning members are expected to attend at least three. Some shoots may also involve travel and lodging.  Our season culminates at SASP Nationals in Marengo, OH in July; entry fee will be around $60.00 per athlete per discipline.
No experience is required for participation. We are a competitive team but education and recreation are our primary goals.
