Interceptors (Shotgun)

The Saint Louis Interceptors youth shotgun team is made up of homeschooled students from the Saint Louis metro area, including surrounding counties. We primarily shoot American Trap but also practice American Skeet and may participate in other shotgun sports.

The Interceptors are registered with or participate in events sponsored by the following governing bodies:

  • ATA - Amateur Trapshooting Association, the official governing body of American Trapshooting, founded in 1900
  • AIM - (Academics, Integrity, Marksmanship) The youth arm of the ATA
  • SCTP - Scholastic Clay Target Program, sponsoring shotgun sports of various disciplines as part of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation.
  • MYSSA - Missouri Youth Sport Shooting Alliance, providing communication and coordination of youth shooting activities across Missouri.
  • NSSA - National Skeet Shooting Association

Information for Participants:

  • Shooting Year:  The competition year begins in September and ends with national competitions which are usually in July or August.  We practice from September until Thanksgiving, then take a winter break.  Practices begin again in late February/early March, weather permitting.  Our spring season kicks off with MYSSA "Spring Break-em" shoots at area gun clubs.  We also have state shoots for both SCTP and AIM at Missouri Trapshooters Association, Linn Creek, MO, a SCTP regional shoot at Sparta, IL, and national shoots - AIM at Sparta, IL and SCTP at Marengo, OH.  At the end of the summer (ending one year and beginning another) is the MYSSA Fall Classic shoot.  We also participate in ATA registered shoots, which establish the athletes' averages and classifications and are available most months.  There are also occasional opportunities for other tournaments, invitational and memorial shoots.  Athletes wishing to shoot other disciplines besides American Trap (e.g. Skeet or Sporting Clays) will have additional event opportunities.
  • Grade/Age Levels: Grades 5 through High School.  Participants must have the physical strength to repeatedly lift, hold, and manage a shotgun; also must have mental and emotional ability to learn, understand and follow safe handling rules.
  • Practices:  5:00 pm Thursday evenings at St. Louis Skeet and Trap Club in Pacific ( map ).  End time varies depending on number of participants present, number of rounds shot and other practice activities.  Generally no later than 8:00.
  • Cost:
  • This is not a cheap sport, but we try to minimize the financial burden on participants. We have no paid staff nor any financial compensation for volunteers. The following costs are to cover the actual expenses:
  • Practice fees:  $6.50 per round of trap or skeet, plus $7.00 per box of ammo (one box per round). These are pre-purchased as punch cards redeemable for 10 units of each. Athletes can purchase their own ammo, rather than using team ammo, if they wish.
  • Team vest:  $100 deposit, payable when an athlete first joins the team.  This will provide a shooting vest, embroidered with the team logo, in the participant's size. This is, effectively, our team “uniform” for practices and competitions. The vest can be exchanged for larger sizes as the team member grows.  When a youth member leaves the team they can return the vest in exchange for their original deposit, or keep the vest as their own.
  • Competition fees: will vary depending on the competition and number of events entered.  Some shoots may also involve travel and lodging.  Fees will vary but typically will be around $30 per 100 targets.  Some shoots are 100 target events, others are 200 target events.
  • Annual Fee:   $125 per participant, which covers:
  • Registrations with our governing bodies:
  • SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program)
  • ATA (Amateur Trapshooting Association)
  • AIM (“Academics, Integrity, Marksmanship” – Youth Shooting arm of ATA)
  • MTA (Missouri Trapshooters Association)
  • NSSA (National Skeet Shooting Association – also includes NSCA/National Sporting Clays Association)
  • MSSA (Missouri State Skeet Association)

No experience is required for participation and athletes are not required to have their own equipment to join. We are a competition team but education and recreation are our primary goals. Interested youth can come and shoot with the team at a practice to try it out.
